How Does an Auto Air Conditioner Work

The auto air conditioner has several parts working together to keep your vehicle's cabin cool and comfortable. To know how the AC system works, it’s good to understand these components.

Parts of An Auto AC System

REFRIGERANT: This is the chemical that absorbs heat from the cabin of the vehicle and then releases it outside. Examples are R134a and the newer R1234yf.

COMPRESSOR: This is the heart of the air conditioning system. It compresses the refrigerant into a high-pressure gas and pumps it through the system.

CONDENSER: This component is located at the front of the car. It’s responsible for dissipating the heat from the refrigerant gas.

EVAPORATOR: It is usually located behind the dash. It is responsible for cooling the air that comes from the vehicle’s cabin. Once cooled, the air will be blown back into the cabin through the vents.

DRYER/ACCUMULATOR: As the refrigerant goes through the system, it absorbs the heat and humidity from the cabin. Once it does that, it passes through the dryer or accumulator (depending on the vehicle’s make and model) to remove any water.

The Refrigerant’s Path

How Often Should an Auto Air Conditioner Be Serviced?

It is recommended to have the air conditioner serviced every two to three years.

This will ensure that the system works efficiently and that any potential issues are identified and fixed before they become major problems.

However, if you spot signs like weak airflow, strange noises from the AC system, unpleasant smells, and warm air blowing from the vents, don’t wait for your next servicing schedule. Immediately have a technician inspect and work on your car’s air conditioner.

What is R1234yf Service?

R1234yf is a newer type of refrigerant that is commonly used in modern vehicles. It is a more environmentally friendly refrigerant compared to older types like R134a.

However, to service a vehicle with R1234yf, the mechanic must have specialized equipment for this refrigerant. The equipment is designed to recover, recycle, and recharge the R1234yf refrigerant.

So, if your vehicle requires R1234yf service, it is crucial to take it to a shop with the necessary equipment and experienced staff to work with this refrigerant type. Maxi Auto Repair and Service is proud to be among those rare shops that offer this service.
